In 2025, hundreds of South African schools have stopped offering Pure Mathematics.

According to Umalusi and verified education reports, over 50% of public high schools no longer offer Pure Mathematics beyond Grade 10. In provinces like the Eastern Cape and Limpopo, that figure is even higher. Instead, learners are enrolled in Mathematical Literacy—often without understanding what that choice means.

And that quiet shift? It’s killing careers before they even begin.

The Dream That Got Grounded

Let’s say a child in Grade 6 says, “I want to be a pilot.”
They don’t yet know that without Pure Mathematics, they will never qualify for aviation school.
Or for engineering. Or medicine. Or architecture. Or data science.

No one tells them their school dropped the subject. No one tells them they’ve already been rerouted—before they even took off.

Why This Is Happening

The reasons are complex, but painfully familiar:

Schools can’t attract or retain qualified maths educators
Classrooms are overcrowded, and teachers are burnt out
Underperforming learners are funnelled into lower-demand subjects to protect school pass rates
There is no immediate strategy from DBE to reverse this trend in high-risk areas

In other words: the system has quietly decided who will succeed and who won’t.

While they study, they work as assistant teachers in high-need schools, bringing maths back into the classroom—with energy, relatability, and structure.
